Follow the little traces of what brings you alive...

🗨️ Whispers from The Inn

Udu has been collecting things again.

I first noticed it a few mornings ago when I found her crouched beside one of the library windows, examining something in the palm of her hand with great seriousness.

When she noticed me watching, she closed her fingers around it, gave me a rather pleased little smile, and tucked whatever she'd found into one of the many pockets of her satchel.

I didn't think much of it at the time. Udu is, after all, Udu.

But since then, I've seen her everywhere.

She spent nearly ten minutes beneath the old oak tree yesterday, gathering what appeared to be a very particular selection of acorns. I caught her watching Button doze in her favorite patch of afternoon sunlight. This morning, she followed Sprigget through the library for a suspiciously long time before scribbling something into a tiny notebook.

And the goblins have apparently become involved.

I know this because one of them came running through the kitchen earlier shouting, "THAT COUNTS! WRITE THAT ONE DOWN!" while Udu hurried after them with her notebook.

Neither of them offered an explanation.

So there is clearly something afoot at the Inn.

For now, Udu seems quite content to keep her little project to herself, and I've learned over the years that some mysteries are better left alone until they're ready to be discovered.

Still...

I've noticed that every time she adds something new to her collection, she smiles.

And I find myself smiling too.

🧭 Hero’s Insight: Let Your Joy Matter

There is something I have learned about joy over the years: it leaves traces.

You can see them everywhere once you begin to notice them. They are in the books we return to again and again, the little treasures we keep even though they serve no practical purpose, the places where we naturally linger, and the things that make us smile before we've had time to decide whether they're worthy of smiling about.

If you've spent much time here at the Inn, you've probably noticed that I have a fondness for greenery. There are vines trailing from shelves and curling around windows, herbs tucked into pots and planters, and little bits of green finding their way into corners where, strictly speaking, no greenery was actually required. I simply like it there. There is something about being surrounded by growing things that makes a place feel peaceful and alive to me, and so, wherever I can, I make room for them.

I think we sometimes forget that we're allowed to do that.

So much of life asks us to consider what is necessary, practical, responsible, useful, sensible, or expected of us. Those things have their place, of course. But somewhere among all those questions, I think there is another one worth asking: What delights me?

Not because delight should become another task to accomplish or because every choice must make us happy, but because our joy tells us something. The things that make us light up, soften, linger, laugh, wonder, or feel a little more at home in our own lives are small clues to who we are.

And when we know that, we can choose to let it matter.

That doesn't mean building a life in which nothing difficult ever happens. Such a life doesn't exist, and I don't think joy asks that of us anyway. I've walked through enough seasons of sorrow to know that a joyful life and an easy life are not the same thing.

Joy does not require sadness to leave before it enters the room.

I've laughed while grieving. I've found comfort in a warm cup of tea on a difficult day. I've noticed something beautiful while carrying something painful. None of those moments erased what hurt, nor did the hurt make those moments of delight any less true.

There is room for both.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons I have come to value joy so deeply. It isn't an escape from the fullness of being alive. It is part of that fullness.

We aren't betraying our grief when we laugh. We aren't ignoring the difficult parts of our lives when we make room for beauty, silliness, pleasure, wonder, or play. And we don't have to wait until everything is settled, healed, finished, or figured out before we're allowed to enjoy being here.

Joy can live beside all of it.

And because of that, I've found that the question What brings me joy? isn't nearly as frivolous as it can sound.

It tells me something about what I love. What I value. What makes me feel at home. What brings me alive. What feels like me.

Those answers don't have to dictate every choice I make. But I do believe they deserve a seat at the table.

Because if I know what brings me alive, I can make room for more of it. I can surround myself with things I love simply because I love them. I can choose experiences that call to me, protect time for what restores me, follow curiosities that make my eyes light up, and allow seemingly insignificant delights to become part of the texture of an ordinary day.

Little by little, those choices become a life.

Not a life made only of joyful things, but a life with my joy woven into it.

And perhaps that is what it means to return to joy—not simply to find it again, but to recognize it as one of the quiet ways we recognize ourselves.

So when something lights you up, dear one, notice.

You don't have to turn it into anything. You don't have to justify it or explain why it matters.

But perhaps you can let it matter.

Perhaps you can follow the traces and see what they remind you about who you are.

And perhaps, one small choice at a time, you can make a little more room for your particular kind of joy in the life you are creating.

🔮 Magical Resource of the Month

✨ Make Yourself a Little Joy

I thought I'd do something a little different with our Magical Resource this month.

Instead of giving you something I've found or made, I want to invite you to go make something of your own.

One of the things that has always brought me joy is making things. Sometimes that's painting or creating something elaborate, but just as often it's something wonderfully simple.

I have a pair of earrings I made out of buttons, for example. Nothing fancy. I quite literally found some buttons I liked, attached them to little rings and earring hooks, and now I have button earrings.

And they delight me to no end! 😂

I think sometimes we make creativity much more complicated than it needs to be. We think we need the right supplies, or enough skill, or a proper project in mind before we're allowed to begin.

But sometimes it's fun to simply play with things.

String some beads together. Doodle in the corner of a page. Paint something even if you have absolutely no idea what you're doing. Make a tiny creature out of clay. Turn an interesting button into an earring.

It doesn't have to be impressive. It doesn't even have to be particularly useful. It can exist simply because you enjoyed making it.

So that's my resource for you this month: a little permission to make something just because you want to see what happens.

Maybe you'll end up with something beautiful. Maybe you'll end up with something ridiculous. Either way, I hope you have fun making it. And if you feel so inclined, send me a missive with a picture of what you create; I would love to see it!

🕯️ Rumors, Remembrings, & Retellings

💝A Little Collection of Joys

A small collection appeared on the Great Table this morning. No explanation was included.

🐉 A tuft of impossibly soft fabric, tied with purple ribbon.
Beside it, a tiny drawing—torn carefully from a notebook—of Elunara curled beneath a mountain of blankets, only the tips of her wings visible.

🕷️ A little golden sun, cut somewhat unevenly from parchment.
A drawing of Button asleep in her favorite spot beside the library window.
Three tiny flower petals.

📜 A pristine new label.
A tiny bottle of ink.
A scrap of parchment whose edges have been lined up very, very precisely.

🍄 An acorn.
A particularly good stick.
Two dried leaves.
One flattened marshmallow…
…between the leaves

🐌 A tea leaf.
A clipping of greenery.
The corner of a map.
A tiny lantern folded from golden paper.

🪙 A shiny acorn cap.
A smooth green stone.
A blue button.
And a drawing of a very small Udu carrying a satchel nearly twice her size.

📌 Notice Board: Quests Around the Realm

Sprigget stands before a rather crowded board, a small stack of fresh parchments tucked beneath one arm, considering the available space with great seriousness, then begins rearranging several pins.

"A busier month around the realm, it seems. Fortunately, I have planned accordingly."

Sprigget reaches for one parchment bearing the seal of The Inn, and two particularly official-looking parchments bearing seals from elsewhere in the realm.

Sprigget takes several steps back and surveys the work, nudging one parchment slightly to the left.

Then back to the right, apparently satisfied.
